We often use herbs and spices to add layers of flavors to our meals. But in reality, we are adding so much more than flavor! Herbs and spices are rich in antioxidants, as well as anti-inflammatory and even anti-bacterial compounds that can truly make a difference in our overall well being. Though often categorized together, the main difference between the two is that herbs are the leafy part of the plant while spices are other parts of the plants dried up.
Aside from their strong phytonutrients, herbs can also be great sources of some essential nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamin A precursors, vitamin C, vitamin K, and folate. Thus, they can help our red blood cells, our heart, our bones, and our immunity, among other benefits.
Below, we will be adding different herbs that are either popular in the kitchen or that have the highest nutritional value. Some are great for seasoning, others are fantastic for making tea, tinctures, or even balms and lotions.
